Netflix’s latest hit TV show was actually canceled last month
Netflix has taken a hit out of Manifest – the airplane-based mystery drama that was canceled by the NBC network in the US last month. According to Nielsen, the show was the most-streamed show or movie in the US for the week of June 14–20, popular enough to beat the new Disney Plus Pixar film, Luca. That was the week the series got the ax.
A month later, This shows that it’s got a pretty strong audience on streamers, though it’s hard to draw such conclusions from those charts.
There were 2.493 billion minutes of Manifest streamed on Netflix during that one week according to Nielsen (via Deadline), which measures viewership from a sample size of US viewers. Netflix doesn’t release its streaming data in the same way, hence why these statistics exist.
It’s from two seasons of 29 40-minute episodes, which is why it’s not very fair to compare it to Luca – that same week, American viewers watched Pixar’s latest 1.57 million minutes, which is only a 96-minute film, I suggest it was very successful.
Still, Manifest should definitely be considered a smash by Netflix, as it nearly doubled the next TV show on the charts — Downton Abbey (1.259 billion minutes), which is also streaming on the service.
So why is the series not continuing?
Well, viewed from the outside, Manifest’s fate is a perfect storm of traditional TV ratings challenges, combined with the power of streaming services to give series a second wind. As TV Line notes, between Seasons 2 and 3 on NBC Manifest’s total weekly viewership dropped by 21%, as well as a 31% drop in the ad-friendly demographic of people watching.
Warner Bros., which makes the show, tried to find it a new home, but was unsuccessful — Netflix was among those they talked to about the show’s future, according to the outlet.
The show was planned for six seasons, but it seems to have ended after three seasons. Manifest airs on Sky in the UK.

These days, Netflix is also so deep into its plans for original content that it’s arguably less likely to need to take on other networks’ shows — and moreover, while Manifest could be a huge hit on the streaming service’s US version.
