People who make advanced reality lenses at Snapchat will soon find another powerful tool: the lidar scanner on the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Snape has released the Lens Studio update, which offers a wide range of canvases for lens manufacturers. Similarly, Snapchat will be one of the first applications to tap into the scanner.
The mesh scanner can copy the metric scale of the environment, allowing the Snapchat camera to gain a deeper understanding of the geometry of objects and surfaces. Snapchat says creatives can tap into the iPhone 12 Pro’s A14 bionic chip and Apple’s ARKit tech.
Version 3.2 of Lens Studio includes an interactive preview mode for the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro to show how lidar lenses work before max shipping. Creators can preview their lidar lenses with the latest iPod Pro in the Snapchat app.
