How to Disconnect iPhone from Mac

The purpose of associating an iPhone with a Mac is to make purchases or to download files on either device and make them available on both simultaneously. Sometimes, however, this association becomes outdated or outlives its usefulness. You would then have to disconnect iPhone from Mac, and here we discuss the various ways how.
Whenever you log in to a device with your Apple ID, all devices associated with that ID become connected. This makes access to Apple services across devices easier. But sometimes we may unknowingly add too many devices and want to disconnect some of them and maybe keep just one or two, like in cases where the entire family is using Apple devices and have a common Apple computer for use. You may also sometimes have a new iPhone while the old one is no longer in use. In such cases, you have to disconnect iPhone from Mac and continue with your new device.

Method 1: Using Mac

The easiest way to how to disconnect iPhone from Mac is via the iTunes app either on your iPhone or your Mac. The list of devices is available on the app and you can simply click on it to disconnect.
Here are the steps you need to follow for how to disconnect iPhone from Mac using a Mac:
  1. On your Mac, open the Apple Music app.
  2. Go to Account > View My Account from the menu bar on top.
  3. If you are not already signed in, you will be prompted to do so using your Apple ID and password.
  4. Under the Could section, select iTunes and choose the “Manage Devices” option. A list of devices connected to your Mac will pop up.
  5. Move the cursor to the device that you want to disconnect and select “Remove.” Your iPhone will be disconnected.
Sometimes, you may not be able to disconnect iPhone from Mac using this method. In that case, you may have to sign out of your Apple ID on the iPhone in question. Then you will have to wait for 90 days before you can log in using another Apple ID on it.

Method 2: Using Mac

  1. On your Mac, open the Applications folder and find the iTunes app. Alternatively, you can see the iTunes icon on your Dock.
  2. Right-click on the iTunes icon or option to open a drop-down menu.
  3. Take the cursor to the “Eject iPhone” option, and it will show the name of the device that will be disconnected.
  4. Once you are sure about the device you are disconnecting, click on “Eject iPhone.”
  5. Unplug your iPhone from your Mac.

Alternatively, you can open the iTunes app on your Mac and follow the below steps:

  1. If your Mac is connected to an iPhone, an iPhone icon will appear right below the Play button and volume slider on iTunes. Click on it.
  2. The Settings panel for your iPhone will open up. Go to Summary. The name of your iPhone should appear on top.
  3. There will be an Eject button beside the name of your iPhone. It looks like an upward arrow button. Click on it.
  4. Unplug your iPhone from the Mac.

Method 3: Using iPhone or iPad

    1. On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > [your name]
    2. Select iTunes & App Store
    3. Tap on your Apple ID. If it so prompts, log in with your credentials.
